Vanguard portfolio tracker: StockDashes

Last updated · By StockDashes

StockDashes is a portfolio tracker for Vanguard investors. Import the Vanguard Download center file and see your real time-weighted return against the S&P 500, in US dollars or euros. Every holding is checked against your own view of the markets, and one 0–100 portfolio score sums it up, with the reasons behind it.

How to export from Vanguard

The file you need is the Download center file, as a CSV file. These are the same steps StockDashes shows when you import it.

  1. Log in on vanguard.com and open My Accounts → Transaction history, then Download center.
  2. Choose A spreadsheet-compatible CSV file, the longest date range (18 months) and your accounts, then download.
  3. The file also lists your current holdings: shares from before those 18 months come in as holdings, and you can add their cost in Edit Portfolio.

Steps last checked October 2026. If a menu looks different, the export is usually under History or Reports.

What StockDashes shows from a Vanguard file

Every trade

Each trade in the Download center file becomes your holdings with their average cost, your realised gains and losses, and the daily history behind your time-weighted return against the S&P 500.

Deposits, dividends and cash

Deposits and withdrawals, dividends and interest, fees and your cash balance as the file states it. They stay in US dollars as Vanguard books them and are shown in the currency you choose, each at its own day’s exchange rate.

Your current holdings

The Download center file also lists what you hold today. Shares from before its date range come in as holdings, and you can add their cost in Edit Portfolio.

Several accounts or years

Upload one file per account, or one per year: they are read together into one portfolio.

The portfolio score

Your dashboard puts one score from 0 to 100 on your portfolio: how well your holdings fit the themes you chose, how diversified they are and how much they swing, with the reasons behind every part. Below is the score card, shown with a fictional example portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

Does StockDashes need my Vanguard login?

No. StockDashes never asks for your Vanguard login or password. You export a file from Vanguard and upload it to your StockDashes account; the file is read when you import it and isn’t kept.

Which Vanguard file do I need?

The Download center file, as a CSV file. It brings in your trades, dividends, deposits and cash. The holdings-only download works too and gives your holdings.

Is StockDashes free?

Yes. The account is free: create one, import your Vanguard file and see your real return and your portfolio score.

Which currency does StockDashes use?

Your choice of US dollars or euros. Values, returns and your score are shown in the currency you choose, against the S&P 500 total return in that same currency, and you can change it any time in Settings.

How often should I import my Vanguard file again?

Whenever you have traded and want your history up to date: export a new file from Vanguard and import it in Edit Portfolio. Between imports, your holdings are valued at the latest prices.

Is my portfolio data private?

Yes. Your portfolio is saved only to your own account and never shown to anyone else. The holdings and transactions from your file are stored in London (UK). There’s no broker login, and we never sell your data.

StockDashes is not affiliated with Vanguard. The example portfolio is fictional. Nothing on this page is investment advice.
