Why DEGIRO’s profit doesn’t match your real return — and how to see it
Last updated · By StockDashes
StockDashes shows your real DEGIRO return as a time-weighted return against the S&P 500 total return, in euros or US dollars, with the currency effect as its own figure — rebuilt from the Account Statement DEGIRO already gives you. DEGIRO shows your account value and a Total P/L in euros, plus realised and unrealised P/L per position: an amount, not a return. Turn it into a percentage of what you put in and the timing of your own deposits and withdrawals pushes the result up or down. A time-weighted return takes that timing out, so it measures how your holdings did and can be set next to an index.
How StockDashes shows it
Your time-weighted return against the S&P 500
The performance page’s chart, Your portfolio vs the S&P 500, links your return day by day from your holdings: each day’s purchases and sales are taken out, so a deposit or a withdrawal can’t move the line, with cash left out. The S&P 500 next to it is its total return in the same currency, and the vs S&P 500 card gives the gap in percentage points. Pick 1M, YTD, 1Y, All or your own start date.
Your money-weighted return per year
The Your return per year card is the money-weighted return (IRR): it counts when you added money, so it shows what your own euros earned, timing included. It appears when the cash history in your statement adds up to today’s balance.
The amounts, separately
Realized P&L, Unrealized P&L and Total P&L sit on the same page, in your currency, and the Currency Impact card shows how much of the change came from the euro–dollar rate.
From the file DEGIRO already gives you
Export the Account Statement (Rekeningoverzicht) over your full history as XLSX and import it. The file is read when you import it and not kept; the holdings and transactions from it are saved to your account.
A worked example
A fictional DEGIRO investor puts 10,000 euros in on 1 January. By 1 July the holdings are up +20.0%, to 12,000 euros, and the investor adds another 10,000 euros. From July to December the holdings go −10.0%, ending at 19,800 euros.
| Over the year | |
|---|---|
| Put in | 20,000 euros |
| Value on 31 December | 19,800 euros |
| Profit or loss (value minus what went in) | −200 euros |
| As a share of what went in | −1.0% |
| Time-weighted return | +8.0% |
| Money-weighted return (per year) | −1.3% |
The profit-and-loss figure says the investor lost 200 euros, −1.0% of what went in. Yet the holdings themselves did +8.0%: (1 + 20%) × (1 − 10%) − 1. The difference is timing — half of the money went in just before the weaker half-year. The time-weighted return (+8.0%) is the figure to set next to the S&P 500; the money-weighted return (−1.3% a year) tells the investor what that timing meant for their own money.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t the profit in DEGIRO match my real return?
DEGIRO’s Total P/L is an amount in euros, not a return. Turn it into a percentage of what you put in and the timing of your deposits and withdrawals moves the result. StockDashes shows the time-weighted return, which takes that timing out, against the S&P 500 total return.
How do I see my real return on DEGIRO, including deposits and withdrawals?
Export your Account Statement over your full history and import it into StockDashes. The performance page shows your time-weighted return, which deposits and withdrawals can’t move, and — when the statement’s cash history adds up to today’s balance — your money-weighted return per year, which counts when you added money.
What is a time-weighted return?
A return that splits your history at every deposit and withdrawal and links the pieces, so the timing of your own money can’t flatter or punish the result. It measures how your holdings did — the number worth comparing with an index.
Does the return include the euro–dollar exchange rate?
Yes: it is in your currency, euros or US dollars, and the Currency Impact card shows the exchange-rate part as its own amount.
Which file do I need from DEGIRO?
The Account Statement (Rekeningoverzicht), exported over your full history as XLSX.
Which holdings does the return cover?
Holdings listed in the US and European shares that also trade in the US, such as ASML or Shell.
